LS2 SUBARU

LS2 Turbo Swapped Subaru STi Build

Jesse from JT Coating had us do a big turbo build on his Subaru STi in the past and it made just over 600whp on E-85. After discussing some options, some type of Chevy LS build was chosen based on cost, performance and overall uniqueness. We began hunting for parts, while Jesse sold off the Subaru parts we would no longer be using.

An LS2 6.0L engine and transmission was sourced and the project began. Our head fabricator Don took charge on the build and started banging out the mock up phase pretty quickly. Everything went together fairly easy, it was like the V8 was meant for the car minus a few small changes. While the engine was out a BTR cam package was installed with a few other supporting mods. As many of you know the supporting mods can be the most important parts of a project.

Once we had the general setup of the engine and headers laid out, the turbo kit began being fabricated. A cast wheel Borg Warner S475 was the turbo of choice, with complimentary Turbosmart & Vibrant pieces to bring it all together.

 

 

 

 

The excitement of seeing the turbo kit and big front mount intercooler mocked up really had us motivated to get this one running. To make all of this work, the cooling system was custom mounted in the trunk with some Radium Engineering bits and good old fashioned ingenuity.

To go along with the AEM Infinity ECU, the new CD-7 display was custom mounted in the dash to give a clean factory appearance. This makes visibility of all engine parameters easy to monitor while driving around. Plus digital displays just look cool on any race inspired project.

IMG_4987   Now that most of the mock up was complete, we disassembled the car and gave Jesse a slew of parts for him to work his magic on. The quality blew us away when he brought them back after powder coating. We knew this would be the head turner we envisioned from the beginning now.

With final assembly under way, we gave Karl from K.P. Tuning a call to sprinkle his LS magic on the build. He came by and went over the build to finalize a few loose ends and get the car started up. It fired up without a hitch and actually sounded pretty tame still using the aftermarket Subaru cat-back exhaust. Now it came down to strapping it on our in house DynoJet, and backing up all the long hours of work. This car runs on regular old 93 octane pump gas, so we filled up and had K.P. get to work. On only the second pull at single digit boost levels it laid down 599whp. Without even blinking an eye it was about to eclipse what the fully built e-85 Subaru setup did.  By the end of the tuning session the final horsepower number read 794whp at only 12psi! K.P. suggested upgrading the fuel system if we wanted more power, being as it is on stock Subaru lines, in tank fuel pump, and only 1000cc injectors.

2017 STi Turbo Kit

dsc_0424editBoth are 2017 STi’s, but the one on the right is getting the PSI built turbo kit. It’s pretty awesome when a customer brings in a practically brand new car for a cool build. The engine is being left stock… for now, but it’s getting the turbo treatment with a big ole Precision turbo.

dsc_0635The plan is to have all the intercooler piping powder coated wrinkle black, and the header & up-pipe ceramic coated by JT Coating. It’ll have a nice clean look, especially with the shaved and powder coated intake manifold. This setup will be pushing it for a stock motor, but I foresee this car getting a built engine in the near future. Here’s a few pics of the fabrication process.

dsc_0662edit1008161623b1Everything is getting bolted up and it’s looking good. I’m really digging the wrinkle black powder coating on the compressor housing, intercooler pipes, and manifold. It keeps the car looking brand new and almost stock at first glance.

After getting finished up and tuned by Anthony, it made 388whp and 358wtq at 16 psi! This turbo set-up is capable of a good amount more, but we kept it safe due to the stock engine and clutch.

2017-comparisonHere’s a dyno graph comparing the car when it was stock and after we finished up with the turbo kit and tune. You can see the massive difference in power. With our big tube UEL header, the 5858 Precision turbo hits full boost only 300 RPM past that of a stock STi. Having that much more exhaust flow played a huge role in making these kind of numbers that early in the RPM range.  With a built engine and upgraded clutch, this kit will be ready to handle a bunch more power.  A big thanks to Mike for bringing us this project, and we hope to see him and his STi back soon!
