LS2 Turbo Swapped Subaru STi Build

Jesse from JT Coating had us do a big turbo build on his Subaru STi in the past and it made just over 600whp on E-85. After discussing some options, some type of Chevy LS build was chosen based on cost, performance and overall uniqueness. We began hunting for parts, while Jesse sold off the Subaru parts we would no longer be using.

An LS2 6.0L engine and transmission was sourced and the project began. Our head fabricator Don took charge on the build and started banging out the mock up phase pretty quickly. Everything went together fairly easy, it was like the V8 was meant for the car minus a few small changes. While the engine was out a BTR cam package was installed with a few other supporting mods. As many of you know the supporting mods can be the most important parts of a project.

Once we had the general setup of the engine and headers laid out, the turbo kit began being fabricated. A cast wheel Borg Warner S475 was the turbo of choice, with complimentary Turbosmart & Vibrant pieces to bring it all together.





The excitement of seeing the turbo kit and big front mount intercooler mocked up really had us motivated to get this one running. To make all of this work, the cooling system was custom mounted in the trunk with some Radium Engineering bits and good old fashioned ingenuity.

To go along with the AEM Infinity ECU, the new CD-7 display was custom mounted in the dash to give a clean factory appearance. This makes visibility of all engine parameters easy to monitor while driving around. Plus digital displays just look cool on any race inspired project.

IMG_4987   Now that most of the mock up was complete, we disassembled the car and gave Jesse a slew of parts for him to work his magic on. The quality blew us away when he brought them back after powder coating. We knew this would be the head turner we envisioned from the beginning now.

With final assembly under way, we gave Karl from K.P. Tuning a call to sprinkle his LS magic on the build. He came by and went over the build to finalize a few loose ends and get the car started up. It fired up without a hitch and actually sounded pretty tame still using the aftermarket Subaru cat-back exhaust. There wasn’t a person in the shop that didn’t have a big smile on their face hearing the car running for the first time. Screen Shot 2017-10-05 at 2.14.04 PM

Now it came down to strapping it on our in house DynoJet, and backing up all the long hours of work. This car runs on regular old 93 octane pump gas, so we filled up and had K.P. get to work. On only the second pull at single digit boost levels it laid down 599whp. Without even blinking an eye it was about to eclipse what the fully built e-85 Subaru setup did.  By the end of the tuning session the final horsepower number read 794whp at only 12psi! K.P. suggested upgrading the fuel system if we wanted more power, being as it is on stock Subaru lines, in tank fuel pump, and only 1000cc injectors.

200WHP N/A LS/VTEC Integra tune

This Integra came in a while ago with the LS/VTEC conversion already completed. It had a few issues and dynoed in the 150-160WHP range. The owner then picked up a new exhaust, installed Acura RDX injectors, a Walbro 255 fuel pump, & brought it back in for a retune. Using Crome, we tuned it to put down 197WHP with ease. Seeing no reason to push every last ounce out of it we left it at this conservative level in anticipation of a Skunk2 throttle body, cams, and intake manifold.

This is another car that may not have put down a lot of power, but shows what the right parts and good tuning can do. The next round of mods will put this well over 200WHP which will make this already fun car a blast to drive on a daily basis. Check back for updates soon!

RB25 single turbo swapped S13 240sx

Here we have a S13 240sx with a legendary Skyline RB25 engine swap. Along with the swap the car is running full supporting mods & a single Garrett 55mm turbocharger. Let me just say, the looks of this car may be controversial with the bright metallic blue paint, widebody body kit, old school non “fitted” wheels, and non “stanced” suspension, but there is no denying the sound & power the RB25 engine produces when modified correctly.

The car was a pleasure to tune & listen to until some small problems arose. The car was running an “ebay” turbo kit with a legit quality Garrett turbo. The external wastegate that was installed wasn’t functioning properly causing severe boost creep the higher the RPM’s climbed. While we wished the car was equipped with higher quality parts to help produce the true potential of this setup there was nothing we could do at the time. To make the best of this situation, boost was set to 14psi and revlimit was set to around 6,500 RPM’s. With keeping max RPM’s here it kept the boost from soaring up to unsafe levels.

Once again this proves that you should use quality parts when modifying your car. Luckily we were able to reach the 340-350WHP goal the owner was looking for, even though we really wanted to make 400WHP with this setup. 1JZ Supra swapped 350Z!!!

Where do I start on this unique…controversial heart transplanted Nissan 350Z? I guess i’ll start with the background. After running multiple VQ35 motors (n/a as well as turbo setups) the owner of this 350Z was tired of having expensive issues and wanted to try something different yet more reliable. So in went the 1JZ 2.5L turbo Toyota Supra motor which has been known to be rock solid over the years.

The car was dropped off to us with the motor in the bay, some wiring done, but overall in need of a lot of work. We built a custom intercooler setup for the car utilizing a Tial QR bov, custom intake, and a full 3″ exhaust that steps up to 4″ in the rear section giving it a unique sound to go with the unique engine swap. After finishing the wiring & other miscellaneous odds and ends we fired it up and boy did it sound wild.

For now, the owner is leaving it stock ecu until funds allow more upgrades so we decided to do some basic data logging on the dyno before it leaves the shop. So stock ecu, stock tune, stock boost with the above mentioned mods left us at 290WHP & 280wtq. We would love to get a tune as well as a few more pounds of boost in this thing, but for now its a responsive fun ride that makes more wheel horsepower then a bolt on VQ35 that originally would of came in the car.

These are just the type of projects that we enjoy here at PSI PROformance, whether they are loved or hated on. Turbo Integra GSR DA tuned

It’s not often you see Acura Integras of the DA era around anymore. Forget seeing one in general, how about a GSR model, that’s clean, turbocharged, and makes 250whp!?!? This Integra is running the original B17 VTEC motor (134k miles on it) along with an Ebay .50trim turbo, FMIC kit , Drag exhaust manifold, and 550cc injectors. The car rips for only making 250WHPat 8psi.

Now many people may think that is “low” for a turbo Honda on a .50 trim, but lets remember this is on an original motor and get this, an original STOCK FUEL PUMP. The pump will be switched out for a Walbro 255 unit & a few other small changes will be made in the upcoming weeks. The owner will then bring it back in & were hoping to see around 300WHP depending on the conditions. The tune is safe, reliable and makes strong power under these circumstances to hold over until more mods can be completed. RX-8/MS3/MS6 etc. MazdaEdit ECU-Flash tuning!

We are proud to announce that we have been tuning newer Mazdas directly with the factory ECU for a little while now. We all have seen this in the EVO/STI world, which made things a breeze for the customer & tuner when working on the car. Also many weren’t happy with the second-hand middle man tuners that were the only way to tune the cars in the past, but that is all behind us now. One of the cars we had in for a MazdaEdit tune was this RX-8 rotary with a K&N intake and stock exhaust running a test pipe. These are known be to overrated on the quoted factory horsepower numbers & this one was no different. After tuning the car it put down 155whp & 113wtq which was a 20+ whp gain from stock. A few more mods to help it breathe would definitely increase these numbers, but for basically being a stock car with a tune these are great improvements.

430whp built Audi A4 tuned!

We don’t often do Euro cars here at PSI PROformance, but when we do its usually a very unique or big build. This Audi A4 1.8l turbo is no exception, and has been one of the owners main projects for years. The workmanship & time that has gone into the engine bay really shows. Only the best of the best was chosen such as a Full-Race turbo kit, a FP HTA30r turbo, JMF one-off intercooler kit & custom intake manifold, along with the built & stroked engine.

With this group of parts, and a 034 Motorsports engine management system the car made good power with ease. On pump gas 93oct, low boost (24 psi), and a conservative tune it laid down 430whp on our in-house awd Dynojet. This setup isn’t even breaking a sweat and is exactly what the owner wanted out of pump gas without pushing it hard.

As you will see in the video the trunk and rear lip aren’t color matched to the rest of the silver exterior. It is one of the only things left to “complete” on the project which the owner is taking care of as we speak. The owner is excited to get the car finished for this upcoming season now that it can be driven anywhere, fill up at any gas station, and be driven reliably. Once the body work is done it will look as good as it sounds & runs. Soon after that completed the car will be coming back in for a re-tune on race gas,  so it can safely crack over 500whp. 400hp 18g Eclipse GST

We’ve tuned this car before, but we were still impressed when it came back in the other day. One of the cleanest/original DSM’s around anymore, and with only 69,000 miles on it your not going to see many more like it. Don’t let the unpainted ’99 front end fool you the rest of this car is original and ON POINT.

As tuning progressed on the dyno it was apparent the tires couldn’t hold the power in 3rd gear. Once dialed in the car was putting down 387whp 394wtq at only 24psi. The owner had 100oct in the tank, but we weren’t even using the gas to its full potential at this low of boost. The owner has some plans in the works to add to the car and bring it back in eventually. We can’t wait to see what he has up his sleeve.

Rotated 18g WRX tuned

Last week we had another Subaru in for a custom ECUflash tune. This time it was a ’02 WRX with a custom rotated turbo kit using a GReddy 18G turbocharger. With a unknown history 60k mile motor, and a host of other typical Subaru upgrades this is a classic do it yourself modified WRX. It’s a great feeling when you can help an owner finish his project by putting a solid tune on the car.

After fighting a few boost leak issues early on we were able to get back to tuning. Slowly turning up the boost the car was picking up power every pull. By 20psi it laid down 309whp on our Dynojet. The owner was extremely happy with it cracking the 300whp barrier & told us this car will have the most horsepower he’s ever driven or rode in. We felt 300whp was a good place to leave the car at for the owner to enjoy while working out a few other things on the setup.

Tons of big horsepower cars come in and out of the shop on a daily basis which can lead to expectations held high on every project/tune. This home built project making 300whp can show us all that even with “only 300whp” there is still people out there that enjoy chasing goals big and little. At the end of the day its the owner who will be driving the car day in and day out and if he’s happy nothing else matters.

600whp blown SRT8 JEEP

This sinister Jeep came in last week for a few dyno pulls after being completed by one of our good customers. It was purchased with a built motor & trans which the owner then added a Procharger D1-SC & fuel upgrades. The flashed tune on the car was very lean & dangerous to run. The owner was pretty disappointed & asked us to tune the car on the spot. A few adjustments were made to be able to safely get a baseline number. It ended up at 525whp & 556whp on our in-house Dynojet.

Using the handheld Diablosport Predator tuner we were able to make some more adjustments which got it to 602whp & 575wtq. Unfortunately the blowers belt was slipping which limited the boost to only 10psi. This setup should be making about 15psi so hopefully once fixed we can fine tune it a bit more and lay down over 700whp! Could you imagine taking your kids to school in a 700whp JEEP?!? We can, and we can’t wait for it to stop back into the shop. Keep an eye out for updated results.
